This place is called Sunayu. At Sunayu you can dig the sand beside the lake and there would be hot spring under the sand! It is so much fun. The temperature of the hot spring is quite hot and you can mix the hot spring water with the lake water to get the right temperature. The kids love playing with the sand and feeling the warm water underneath the sand. It is totally free. Just take your own sand tools there and have a lot of fun. Highly Recommended!
古丹露天溫泉
Not very far from SoRa at Lake Kussharo (but you need to drive), there is an open-air onsen by the lake called Kotan Onsen. It is completely free. But the male and female pools are only separated by a rock which is not very big. So some people wear their swimming suits. However, the locals do not wear anything in the hot spring pools. The view of the onsen is absolutely gorgeous. You’re literally right by the lake with only a few rocks between the onsen pool and the lake. And you could be surrounded by wild swans that come for the heat of the hot spring during winter.
